Rose Will Open Next Year The Rose of Kingston, Sir Peter Hall's planned Elizabethan theatre, will open in the autumn of 2007, media reports say. Housed in a mdoern building and costing £11m, the 1,100 capacity theatre follows the groundplan of its Elizabethan predecessor where many of Shakespeare's early plays were performed. Kingston Council confirmed this week that it will fund the fitting out of the theatre and work will start in the autumn. The auditorium will comprise a thrust stage of the kind used in Shakespeare's time, as at the Globe, and three tiers of seats, plus a space for the grounlings. The theatre will be occupied by a 20-strong resident company under the artitsic directorship of Peter Hall and will also be home to a new MFA degree in classical theatre in association with the University of Kingston. "Im overjoyed that we are starting work to complete and open the theatre," siad Peter Hall in a statement. "Rose of Kingston is a unique and very special performance venue and will be a centre of excellence and entertainment not only for our local audience but also for the wider theatre-going public. And if you add to the building and the Roses own company of actors our plan to have a small band of student actors from Kingston Universitys new MFA programme, we have the real possibility of handing on classical theatre techniques to future generations. I cant wait to get started." The theatre was originally due to open in a year ago and then the opening was put back to this summer because of funding problems.
