The Rose of Kingston interior

Rose to Open with Vanya

The Rose of Kingston, built in the style of the Elizabethan Rose on London's Bankside, will open on 16th January, 2008, with English Touring Theatre's new production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. The production, which will be directed by the Rose' director Sir Peter Hall, will premiere at the Kingston-upon-Thames theatre. Hall has led the vision for the Rose for the past 5 years and directed As You Like It in the shell of the theatre, prior to its completion.

The inaugural season at the Rose will also include Visiting Mr. Green, a play by Jeff Baron, with Warren Mitchell; the musical Blonde Bombshells of 1943; George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl presented by Birmingham Stage Company; Northern Broadsides with a production of Romeo and Juliet; and National Youth Music Theatre and Kingston University's production of The Ragged Child.

In addition to these productions, there will be a number of one night events including Sweet William with Michael Pennington; a monthly show from the Comedy Store, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, An Audience with Rabbi Lionel Blue, and other music and comedy acts.

The main auditorium is inspired by the Rose Theatre of 1587 - the playhouse on London's Bankside in which Shakespeare's early plays were premiered, but otherwise it is a modern theatre, with 21st century technology and facilities.

The nature of Rose of Kingston - with performers on an open stage surrounded by three tiers of seating and the pit audience immediately in front of the stage - will give the theatre a sense of intimacy, creating a special relationship between performer and audience.

The opening season at the Rose of Kingston will enable the theatre company to explore how the theatre space works and will encourage a wide range of audiences into the new venue. Fundraising for the theatre will continue throughout this exploratory season in order to realise the vision for a repertory ensemble company from September 2008.

Full details of the season will be available at the beginning of November, when the theatre will launch the programme and booking will open for the first season at the Rose. Friends of the Rose will benefit from priority booking tickets from Monday 5th November. Public booking for the season will open on Monday 12th November 2007.
