News from the Royal Court

Between June and August three plays which were presented last year in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs (the Royal Court's studio space) will tansfer to the much larger Theatre Downstairs. The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg, translated by Maja Zade, will run from 10th to 28th June and will again directed by Ramin Grey and starring Michael Gould. It will be followed, from 7th to 19th July, by Free Outgoing by Indian playwright Chandresekhar, which is directed by Indhu Rubasingham and stars Lolita Chakrabarti. Finally, from 23rd July to 9th August, comes Bola Agbaje’s Gone Too Far!, which has been nominated for the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.

In April there will be four plays by Mark Ravenhill, a cycle of sixteen short plays exploring the personal and political effect of war on modern life. Under the general title Shoot / Get Treasure / Repeat, these plays, which began life as Ravenhill for Breakfast at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe, will be performed at the National Theatre, the Gate Theatre and other unusual spaces spaces across London, including a Victorian warehouse in Shoreditch. The cycle is being presented jointly by the Royal Court, Gate Theatre, the National Theatre, Out Of Joint and Paines Plough.

The four Royal Court-based productions will be (Tues 8th -Sat 12th April at 6pm) The Mother, directed by Max Stafford-Clark and starring Lesley Manville (produced by Out of Joint); (same dates at 9.30pm) Birth of a Nation, directed by Ramin Gray; and, from Tues 15th - Sat 19th April, a double bill, consisting of Fear and Misery and War and Peace, directed by Dominic Cooke.

A new play by Mike Bartlett, Contractions, will be performed backstage at the Royal Court from 29th May to 14th June, the first of new artistic director Dominic Cooke's plays which will be performed in unusual locations and at unusual times. It is, the theatre tells us, "An ink-black comedy about work and play, which invites the audience to a meeting at the centre of the Royal Court building."

Meanwhile Polly Stenham's That Face will transfer to the Dujke of York's from 1st May to 5th July. Directed by Jeremy Herrin, the cast includes Lindsay Duncan, Matt Smith, Catherine Steadman and Julian Wadham.

Finally some casting has been announced for Martin Crimp's The City (24th April - 7th June in the Theatre Downstairs) and Bliss by Olivier Choinière, translated by Caryl Churchill (Theatre Upstairs, 28th March - 26th April).

Benedict Cumberbatch and Hattie Morahan appear in The City, which is directed by Katie Mitchell, and the cast of Bliss, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, will include Brid Brennan, Hayley Carmichael, Neil Dudgeon and Justin Salinger.
