First Impressions of the RSC The Royal Shakespeare Company is exhibiting drawings and sketches by Balsall Heath (Birmingham) based artist, Paul Boothe in The Other Place Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon from 2 June to 9 July. Paul describes himself as an Urban Artist with a working class background.
Paul came to the Royal Shakespeare Company for the first time in February 2005 as part of the STRIDE pilot project. STRIDE is funded by the Arts Council of England and was set up as a work placement programme for emerging disabled arts workers living in the West Midlands.
Paul has taken a year out of his Birmingham University Theatre Design course to work with the company. Tom Piper, the RSCs Associate Designer explains, "Paul arrived at the RSC as we were in technical rehearsals for Solstice (a new play by Zinnie Harris currently running at the The Other Place). He later attended costume fittings and the rehearsals for Twelfth Night (directed Michael Boyd).
"His drawings have varied from rapid free sketches to fully detailed and coloured works that he would finish away from the rehearsals. As a designer it is fascinating to see how another artist has viewed your work and the way Paul has captured a flavour of each production."
The exhibition is called First Impressions by Paul Boothe and showcases some of Pauls work inspired by the companys productions of Solstice and Twelfth Night. It runs at the RSCs The Other Place Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 2nd until 9th June 2005. The aim of STRIDE is to support disabled students and graduates who are currently undertaking or have just completed further or higher educational courses. A key focus of the project is to provide emerging arts workers with opportunities to gain real experience of working in the arts environment. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
