Sacred in Chelsea

Following the success of Live 05, when 17 companies gave over 56 performances over a three month period, Chelsea Theatre presents Sacred, a season of new theatre. Building and furthering last year's initiative, Sacred is an experiment in Live Art, which is one of the most controversial and hotly discussed areas of art practice to emerge in the second half of the twentieth century.

Challenging to audiences, art traditions and cultural values, with elements of performance now part of the practice of many of today's best-known artists, and boundaries between visual art, theatre and Live Art more and more blurred. Sacred is a two-part season of innovative Live Art, where six major international performers present their take on relationships, religion, punk, death and shepherd's pie, challenging the very structures of theatre itself. Each of these established superstar performers have been invited by Chelsea Theatre to mentor a new or emerging artist who will make a complementary new show to ensure that Live Art carries on to a new generation. Sacred runs at Chelsea Theatre from Tuesday 5th September, 2006, to Wednesday 2nd May, 2007.

The season is divided into two: - Autumn 2006 is Get In At The Start! which sees each pair of artists performing in double bills. Audiences will witness the forming of a performance and see ideas take shape. There will be an opportunity to take part in Q & A sessions with the artists, where audiences can partake in the exploratory processes and practices and witness the different approaches to ideas, artist and programmes that Live Art demands. These discussions will inform the development of the pieces, which will then gradually take shape leading to 2007 performances The Finished Article where each of the artists performs solo, presenting their world premieres.
