Philip Wilson

New Artistic Director at Salisbury

Salisbury Playhouse has announced that Philip Wilson has been appointed the new Artistic Director, succeeding Joanna Read who leaves in July. He takes up the post in the autumn, joining Executive Director Michelle Carwardine-Palmer in leading the Playhouse in realising its future plans.

Currently a freelance director, Philip Wilson has established himself as a highly regarded director of both classic plays and contemporary pieces. His most recent work, a production of Noises Off, is currently playing at the Liverpool Playhouse. He directed Corpse! at Salisbury Playhouse last autumn and was already due to return to direct Michael Frayn’s Alphabetical Order this October.

Philip Wilson says, “I am thrilled that I am becoming the Playhouse’s Artistic Director. I have been a regular visitor to its two theatres for nearly fifteen years, and have thoroughly enjoyed my previous experience of directing here, as a freelancer. The Playhouse is in a tremendously exciting period of development, most notably in the imminent opening of the Tesco Community and Education space, and brand new on-site Rehearsal Room. Joanna Read hands on the building in an extremely healthy state, both financially and in terms of audiences. I’m really looking forward to taking up the baton and working with the team to create richly diverse theatre of the highest quality, for all our audiences, in the years to come.”

Chairman of the Board, Jack Wills, says, “I am extremely pleased to welcome Philip as Artistic Director. Philip is an immensely talented director, and – in an incredibly strong field of applicants – stood out in terms of his enthusiasm, passion and commitment. He offers a distinctive artistic vision that will ensure that the Playhouse will continue to play a leading role in theatre, in Wiltshire and beyond.”

Before joining the Playhouse in the autumn, Philip Wilson will be directing Coward, Cocktails and Cabaret in Chichester. His many theatre credits include In Praise of Love (Chichester Minerva), The Found Man (Traverse), Un Uomo Trovato (Teatro della Limonaia, Florence), Ain’t Misbehavin’ (Sheffield Crucible), Dr Faustus, The Astonished Heart/Still Life (Liverpool Playhouse) and Breaking the Code (Theatre Royal, Northampton). He was awarded the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme bursary in 1995 and spent eighteen months at Greenwich Theatre. His film and television work includes being Performance Consultant for Shakespeare in Love and two years as a producer in the Entertainment Department of the BBC.
