Ghandi's Story in Brentford

To mark the 60th anniversary of independence on the subcontinent, Watermans in High Street, Brentford, hosts the acclaimed international theatre production Sammy! by Primetime Theatre Company of India. Directed by Lillete Dubey and written by Partap Sharma, Sammy! tells the story of Mahatma Gandhi, a man whose influence changed politics irrevocably.

The play traces Gandhi's transformation from the young and naïve protestor Mohan Das in South Africa to his development into an astute politician and finally a Mahatma, or 'Great Soul'.

Led by an ensemble of eight actors, this production looks beyond the image of Gandhi as a dhoti-clad man with a spinning wheel; to reveal how he went on to develop his philosophy of Satyagraha (non-violence) as he observed injustices around him. It shows how he tried to lead by example much to the consternation of his wife Kasturba, who, although fiercely smart, found herself acquiescing to his many demands, as Gandhi wrestled with his self doubts and 'experiments' with the truth.

Gandhi's conscience and his 'inner voice' are depicted through the portrayal of an alter-ego character and Sammy! offers a human portrait of one of the worlds' most influential personalities of the 20th century.

The title of the play, Sammy!, is derived from the word swami - the word was used as an insult thrown at Indians taken to South Africa as indentured labourers. However, swami means master or guru and when Gandhi heard himself being described as Sammy he quietly smiled and resolved to turn this abuse into an adequate description…….

At the 2006 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, Sammy! won Best Director, Best Original Script, Best Actor (Joy Sengupta (Young Gandhi) & Best Costume Design (Trishna Popat & Arti).

Salema Khanum, Head of Asian Arts Development says, "Watermans has been programming Asian arts for over 20 years and is committed to showcasing the finest talent from within the UK & abroad. This is a powerful work relevant to our times."

The play runs at the Brentford venue from Tuesday 6th to Sunday 11th & from Tuesday 12th to Sun 18th February at 7.45pm
