Sam Walters

"Penny-Pinching Madness"

Sam Walters, artistic director of Richmond's Orange Tree Theatre, has described Arts Council England's proposed cuts as "penny-pinching madness".

In a letter to the Evening Standard he said, "The sums that the Arts Council is threatening to withdraw from small theatres are peanuts in their overall budget but of course catastrophic for the theatres involved. Given that the overall budget for the arts was higher than expected, these proposals appear to be penny-pinching madness."

The Orange Tree is threatened with a cut of slightly over 17%, a drop from £361,828 to £300,000.

"A cut to the already underfunded theatre," he went on, "would mean a cut to training, a cut to new work and a cut for the theatre's pioneering rediscovery of overlooked plays from the past."

He also pointed out that four former members of the Orange Tree's trainee director scheme are now artistic directors of four theatres — Dominic Hill (Traverse, Edinburgh), Rachel Kavanaugh (Birmingham Rep), Timothy Sheader (Regent's Park) and Ellie Jones (Southwark Playhouse).
