Why West Is Leaving Sheffield In an interview with The Stage Sam West has explained why he decided to step down as artistic director of Sheffield Theatres. His reason is not, as the joint statement said, to pursue other projects but because he wanted the Crucible to carry on producing "outside the theatre, with co-productions, found spaces, bringing back old shows that had served us well and doing West End seasons" whilst the Crucible is closed for refurbishment for most of the 2007 season through to the 2009. However the Board was unable to guarantee the finance and so he decided to leave. "The job of artistic director becomes unviable when theres no art to direct," he told the newspaper. A further statement from the board says, "As an artist [West] is keen to produce theatre whilst the Crucible is closed but also realises that in this case it is not possible and in order to secure the long-term future of the theatre, and those who work in it and with it, he is acutely aware of how crucial planning the finances for the next period of development is." He still believes, however, that there may be some possibility of compromise: "My understanding is that at a board meeting next week were going to look at if there is an opportunity to put work on during the closure and I want to be a part of that discussion. The impression Im getting now is that the discussion is not over," he said. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
