The Savoy Theatre

Savoy Opera "Unable to Continue"

In spite of the success of its first two productions, The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, the new Savoy Opera will not be able to continue its planned season, a statement issued by producers Stephen Waley-Cohen and Raymond Gubbay says.

The two operas have been well received and will continue their season, which finishes on 19th June, but the planned future productions will not go ahead as planned. The reason, the statement says, is that ticket sales have not been what was expected and are "not sufficient to enable us to continue on the current timetable beyond then.”

The planned season was to have comprised

  • Carmen and L'Elisir d'Amour (3rd July to 11th September)
  • La Traviata and La Belle Helene (25th September to 4th December)
  • The Magic Flute (15th December to 5th February, 2005)
