“Theatrical dynamite”: Adrian Scarborough

Adrian Scarborough will join Mark Gatiss in the Nottingham Playhouse production of Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III which has added extra performances “due to popular demand from across the UK”.

As previously announced, Gatiss will take the lead role in the play which is one of the highlights of Adam Penford’s first year as artistic director.

Penford said, “Adrian Scarborough and I have been looking for a project to work on together for a long time. He and Mark Gatiss are two of the UK’s leading theatre actors; their combined talents on stage in this modern classic will be theatrical dynamite.

“The play is dramatic, moving and funny. It focuses on power and identity, examining the fine line between a king and a man.”

Scarborough, who will play Dr Willis, won an Olivier Award in 2011 for best supporting actor in the National Theatre revival of After the Dance by Terence Rattigan. He also played Fool in the National Theatre production of Shakespeare’s King Lear in 2014 and George in Hedda Gabler at the Old Vic in 2012.

The Madness of George III will run at Nottingham Playhouse from Friday 2 November until Saturday 24 November. A gala performance on Thursday 22 November will mark the 70th anniversary of Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company. The theatre aims to celebrate the milestone by raising £20,000 on the night to support its access and community work and its artist development programme.
