Schlock Horror! Uninvited Guests, a Bristol-based performance group, is to tour its latest show Schlock to London, Lancaster, Leicester, Exeter, Alsager, Colchester and Cambridge during February and March 2005. The Companys signature blend of high and low tech is very evident in Schlocks poignant confessions and B-movie melodrama, its real acts of violence and pints of fake blood. Personal accounts of accidents and violent attacks, gathered from interviewing friends and family, are mixed with text and images plundered from TV hospital dramas and horror-flicks. The result of all this fake blood-letting seems both disconcerting and darkly comic. Like the TV viewer at home, the audience are protected from the spray of film blood, ketchup and the dangers of moral terror by a clear Perspex screen that separates them from the action. Schlock asks if we can we sit at the bedside of a loved-one in hospital, or hear the beeps of a heart monitor, without thinking of endless scenes from film or TV? What is it in horror that holds us? What makes us want to look at accidents as we drive-by? Uninvited Guests explore our desire to look and to look away as they attempt to deal with current cultural fears of terror. For this project, they have collaborated with innovative sound artist Duncan Speakman, who uses custom-made software to produce a unique soundtrack for each performance using live sampling of internal noises from the performers bodies.
