The scoop
The Scoop

Free Open-Air Theatre

For three weeks last summer, The Steam Industry performed an impromptu free production of the classic Oedipus on the banks of the Thames in More London's amphitheatre, The Scoop. The public response to this event was extraordinary, with large, diverse audiences joining together to experience an evening of free open-air theatre under the lights of Tower Bridge.

Due to popular demand, More London has invited the company back to The Scoop this summer, to present a six-week season of free open-air theatre, unique to London, performing Aeschylus's gripping Greek tragedy Agamemnon, translated by Kenneth McLeish & Frederic Raphael, and Bernard Shaw's Roman comedy Androcles and the Lion. Directed by the award-winning Phil Willmott, the season opens on 29th July and runs until 5th September (Thursday to Sunday only), performing in repertory.

As part of their free open-air theatre season, the company will also be running two weeks of education activities aimed at young people from the local Southwark community, which will culminate in a series of public performances at The Scoop.

Generously supported by More London and Ernst & Young, the season is presented by Suzanna Rosenthal and The Steam Industry, whose recent off-West End successes include: Victor/Victoria, Henry VIII, Arturo Ui at the Bridewell Theatre; and Measure For Measure Malaya at Riverside Studios.

The Scoop is located on the south bank of the Thames, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge.
