The Scoop's Fourth Theatre Season "Every summer our aim is simply to give as many people as possible the chance to watch great plays, in fine productions, in the open-air, for free." The Steam Industry returns to the Scoop at More London for its fourth year this summer, presenting seven weeks of free theatre. Performing two plays in repertory, the company will present Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle, translated by James & Tania Stern and W H Auden, and the 'modern world' premiere of Euripides' comedy adventure, CYCLOPS! in a new version by Phil Willmott. The season opens on 3rd August and runs until 17th September (performances Wednesday - Sundays). Set on the banks of the Thames under the lights of Tower Bridge and the illuminated fountains of More London, this open-air amphitheatre presents a uniquely accessible outdoor theatre space right in the heart of London. Since its launch in 2003, over 75,000 people have enjoyed - for free - the company's critically-acclaimed productions which have included Oedipus, Agamemnon, Androcles and the Lion, The London Nativity, Children of Hercules and Treasure Island. Attracting a widely diverse audience, the season unites people of all ages, nationality and background to share in a unique theatrical experience, dramatically performed under a star-lit sky, against a fiery sunset, or bathed in the warm sunshine of a weekend afternoon. This year, the Steam Industry is collaborating with the National Youth Theatre, offering NYT actors and Stage Management the opportunity to experience the unique creative process of staging a show in an outdoor space. The collaboration allows both companies to continue developing a wider audience and supports the NYT's artistic policy of creating surprising events in unusual spaces. Continuing its commitment to young people from the local community of Southwark, the company return with an inventive programme of summer school activities, offering free participatory workshops for 16-21 year olds, which will culminate in a series of public performances at the Scoop.
