Dateline: 16th May, 2004 Scotland Spends More Scotland spends more on the arts per capita than any other part of the United Kingdom, research from Glasgow University has revealed. In 2001/2, the last year for which full figures are available, Scotland (population 5.1m) spent £30.53 per person on the arts, compared to £17.96 in England (pop. 49.4m), £22.97 in Wales (pop. 2.9m) and £20.65 in Northern Ireland (pop. 1.7m). The Centre for Cultural Policy Research at the university estimated government expenditure on the arts as a percenatge of total expenditure and found that in all cases it was less than a half of one percent: Scotland 0.49%, England 0.36%, Wales 0.39% and Northern Ireland 0.31%.
