Desperately Seeking Cinders

The producers of the Theatre Royal Newcastle pantomime, Cinderella, are descending on Tyneside as part of a nationwide, 'search for a Cinderella'.

The pantomime, which this year stars Jill Halfpenny as the fairy godmother, opens on Saturday 10th December but the title role of Cinderella is yet to be cast.

Qdos Entertainment, the company behind the pantomime, will be visiting the North East in October in the hope of finding the perfect girl to play Cinderella in this year's panto.

Wallsend born Michael Harrison, producer of the show, is excited about the possibility of finding Cinderella in his home town and has arranged open auditions at the Theatre Royal on Saturday 22nd October.

"I've been up and down the country searching for the perfect girl to play Cinderella," he said, "and so far I've been out of luck.

"What I'm looking for is a girl aged 16-21 with outstanding singing and acting skills and the ability to learn dance moves. As ever the quality of the Theatre Royal pantomime is of West End standard with truly exceptional costumes, set design and script. The right girl must have some form of stage experience and must be able to cope with the demanding schedule of a pantomime star.

"This could be a great opportunity for the right girl and I can't wait to see what the North East has to offer."

Qdos Entertainment is the largest producer of pantomimes in the world. The company's 2005 pantomime season has twenty productions throughout the UK, with others in Johannesburg and Dublin.

Anyone interested in auditioning for the role of Cinderella should arrive at the Theatre Royal Stage Door from 09.00am on Saturday 22 October. The producers ask that each girl brings sheet music and performs either a Disney song or a popular ballad. Auditions will end at 5pm.

It is strongly recommended that those who wish to audition should arrive early and wrap up warmly as they could be waiting outside for a long time.
