New Season at Sheffield In spite of being without an artistic director since Samuel West left in April - and he explained in January that his reason for leaving was that he wanted the Crucible to carry on producing "outside the theatre, with co-productions, found spaces, bringing back old shows that had served us well and doing West End seasons" whilst the Crucible is closed for refurbishment for most of the 2007 season through to the 2009 - Sheffield Theatres have announced their autumn season. In the Crucible in November, Nikolai Foster will direct a revival of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus. In February (from 21st to 8th March) in the Lyceum, Ellie Jones will direct Bernard Pomerances The Elephant Man, which will then go on tour. This follows the annual pantomime, which this year will be Cinderella, which runs from 13th December to 12th January. There will be one production in the Studio, a co-production with Nottingham Playhouse Roundabout of The Ugly Duckling, which will run from 5th to 22nd December. A statement from Sheffield Theatre says that, although builders are now on-site, "The Crucible remains open during Phase One of the redevelopment, which will see the theatre gain a distinctive new brass roof, and will not close until May 2008." The Lyceum will not be affected by the work on the Crucible.
