Sheridan Morley Dies Critic, writer and radio and TV presenter Sheridan Morley, the son of actor Robert Morley and grandson of actress Gladys Cooper, has died unexpectedly at the age of 65. He died in his sleep on Friday 16th February. He began his career as a journalist and was the ITV newsreader who announced the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. As a broadcaster he was the presenter of BBC Radio 4's Kaleidoscope and the Radio 2 Arts Programme, for which he presented over a thousand editions. He was arts editor and theatre critic for Punch, as well as theatre critic for a number of newspapers. He also presented Late Night Line-Up on BBC Two from 1967 to 1975. His books include A Talent To Amuse - The Life of Noel Coward, The Stephen Sondheim Songbook, The Noel Coward Diaries, Tales from The Hollywood Raj, The Theatregoers Quiz Book and The Great Stage Stars as well as biographies of Dirk Bogarde, Gene Kelly, Sir John Gielgud and his father and grandmother. He also turned his hand to writing stage musicals, including Noel and Gertie and Spread A Little Happiness. Although he tried acting early in his career, his father was not impressed, but he returned to it recently and appeared in the TV series Judge John Deed, starring Martin Shaw. He leaves a wife, critic and TV producer Ruth Leon, and three adult children by his first marriage. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
