Autumn at Sherman Cymru

The much anticipated new Welsh company, based in Cardiff and formed from the merger of what Director Chris Ricketts described as "two giants in contemporary Welsh drama", (the Sherman Theatre and Sgript Cymru), has announced its first season.

Ricketts explained that the new company's name, Sherman Cymru, "has been chosen to both mark change and reflect our commitment to being a national company."

Ricketts was announced as Director of the new company in November 2006, and brings twenty years experience in theatre, including four years as Director of Wales Arts International, as well as senior roles in Theatr Clwyd Cymru and the Liverpool and Merseyside Theatre Trust.

The Sherman Cymru plans an official launch and a re-branding early in the new year, but already their autumn season offers a tantalising glimpse of what is to come, with a mix of in-house work, new Welsh writing, sustained links with established Welsh companies such as Clwyd Theatr Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, and a host of acclaimed artists and performers from around the UK, including, this season, the National Theatre, Out of Joint and The Bush, and Eddie Ladd, with a ballet originally commissioned by ROH2 at the Royal Opera House.

Ricketts said, "As part of how we develop our programme we really want to build relationships with some of the UK's leading companies whose work is rarely seen in Wales, and offer audiences a programme that both inspires and entertains".

The season opens, aptly enough, with a new Welsh language play, Maes Terfyn, by poet and musician Gwyneth Glyn, which tells the story of a young Welsh business woman who returns home to Wales from London, in order to re-learn the Welsh language.
