Sherman Refurb Begins in February

The £3.9 million Arts Council of Wales grant for the modernisation and refurbishment of Cardiff’s Sherman Cymru Theatre is to commence from next month.

The long-awaited refurb will see the theatre close for 18 months, although the Sherman, Cardiff’s only producing theatre, will continue to stage productions in venues across the Welsh capital.

The new design is the work of Architect Jonathan Adams, part of the tream behind the imposing Wales Millenium Centre.

The theatre launched a fundraising campaign last autumn to raise a further £1.5 million needed to complete the project. Siân Phillips and Matthew Rhys were announced as the campaign’s patrons.

The existing Sherman Cymru Theatre will stage a final production in February, a re-telling of Oedipus and Antigone specially commissioned for the occasion by the Welsh-based playwright, D J Britton. With a cast of more than 100 young actors, Oedipus/Antigone will be a promenade performance, leading its audiences throughout the shell of the current building.
