Dateline: 9th December, 2005
For the first time since it was opened by Queen Victoria on March 29, 1871, the Royal Albert Hall is to present a fully stage musical in the round. Next year will see eighteen performances (from 10th to 25th June ) of Kern and Hammerstein's 1939 classic Showboat, directed by Francesca Zambello. She has worked throughout Europe and the United States, winning three Oliviers for Khovanshchina (English National Opera, 1994), Billy Budd (Royal Opera House, 1995) and Paul Bunyan (Royal Opera House, 1998) and an Evening Standard Award for Best Musical for Lady in the Dark (National Theatre, 1997). Other awards include the French Grand Prix des Critiques for Billy Budd (Paris Opera, 1997) and for War and Peace (Paris Opera, 2000) and Critics Golden Prize for 1999 for Best Production, for Dialogues of the Carmelites in Japan For Showboat the company will include two choruses and 65 musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
