Roxana Silbert

Silbert to Leave Paines Plough

After four years as the eighth Artistic Director of Paines Plough, Roxana Silbert steps down this autumn. She leaves to continue her Associate Directorship at the Royal Shakespeare Company and to undertake a Clore Fellowship.

She joined the company in 2005. During her directorship, the company has won numerous awards including a Fringe First and Spirit of the Fringe (2007) award for the Ravenhill for Breakfast season at the Edinburgh Festival, and two Empty Space Peter Brook Awards for the use and development of theatre and non-theatre spaces.

She also broke new ground in seeking innovative ways of producing, such as Mark Ravenhill’s epic Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat in the Village Underground space, where Paines Plough was the first company to produce theatre, which began as Ravenhill for Breakfast at the Traverse in Edinburgh. Paines Plough was also the first company to co-produce with Shunt vaults for their acclaimed Play, Pie and a Pint season featuring Being Norwegian by David Greig, Between Wolf and Dog by Sean Buckley, Crazy Love by Che Walker and Dirt Under The Carpet by Rona Munro. Dallas Sweetman by Sebastian Barry was the first ever play to be produced in the nave of Canterbury Cathedral and paves the way for a new tradition of Cathedral Plays.

David Edwards, Chair of the Paines Plough Board said, "Roxana has been an inspirational, passionate and committed director. She has taken the company into previously unexplored territory, keeping Paines Plough a fresh and lively theatre company, at the forefront of new writing. She has developed strong relationships with both emerging and established playwrights through four years of innovative work. She leaves Paines Plough in a very strong position, and although we are very sorry to lose her from the company, we wish her every success in what is sure to be an exciting future career."

She also launched the popular late night writers’ salon LATER and the award winning scheme for emerging writers, Future Perfect, that has uncovered some of the brightest contemporary young writing talent.
