Arcola Premieres Buffini's Silence The Arcola Theatre is to present the London premiere of Moira Buffini's award winning play Silence, a provocative comedy set in the mud of Dark Ages England, from Tuesday 9th to Saturday 27th August. Amid the chaos of Viking raids and end of millennium panic, Silence, the young Lord of Cumbria, is forced to marry a bolshy French Princess at the behest of the English King. On their wedding night both are horrified to discover that Silence is actually a girl who until that point has been ignorant of her sex. The two women realise they must hide this secret or risk losing the seat of Cumbria so they flee to the North on the back of a cart. On a journey dictated by English weather, cross dressing and magic mushrooms, they fight to escape the wrath of the King who follows with murderous intent. Winner of The Susan Smith Blackburn Award, Silence was originally commissioned by the Royal National Theatre Studio. This new production enjoyed a highly successful run earlier this year as part of the Royal Shakespeare Companys fringe festival, and transfers from The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon with the original RSC cast and creative team. The cast includes: Endy McKay (Agnes), Laurence Mitchell (Roger), Merryn Owen (Eadric), Emma Powell (Silence), Beth Vyse (Ymma) and Miltos Yerolemou (Ethelred). The cast were all involved in the RSCs recent tour of Julius Caesar and The Two Gentlemen of Verona or the RSCs 2004 production of Beauty and the Beast. Silence is presented at the Arcola by Pyre Productions with the full support of the RSC as a showcase piece for this new young company of ex-RSC artists. The company is delighted to have the backing of Moira Buffini whose other work includes Dinner (National Theatre and West End), Loveplay and The Doomsday Girl (RSC) and The Games Room (for the focus group at the Soho Theatre). The production is directed by Gemma Fairlie, who has most recently been working as the resident director on the RSCs regional tour of Julius Caesar and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Her other work includes Protect Me From What I Want (Young Vic), The Memory of Water (Barons Court), The Frog Prince (Cockpit), and site specific versions of The Country Wife and new writing piece >PUSH in Edinburgh. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
