Simon Gray

New - the Simon Gray Award

In honour of the life and work of the playwright and diarist Simon Gray (1936-2008), a committee of his friends and peers - Simon Callow CBE, Judy Daish, Felicity Kendal CBE, Victoria Gray, Michael Rudman, Sigrid Rausing, Dinah Wood - today announced the establishment of the Simon Gray Award. This annual award of £17,000 is to go towards the production of a play never previously staged in London. In its inaugural year, the committee has decided to give the award to the Bush Theatre.

The committee said today, "A few years ago someone wanted to set up a prize in Simon Gray's name. Simon was touched but said that a) he didn't want a prize in his name, b) it was something best done after he was dead, and c) what a writer really wanted was not a prize but to have his work produced. Any award, therefore, should really go towards staging a play. And so we are delighted to announce the Simon Gray Award which does exactly that: it supports a production. We chose to launch it in association with the Bush Theatre, our local, a vibrant and vital theatre that puts on new and exciting plays and is now entering a thrilling phase of its life with the move to Uxbridge Road. It's good to be part of that, and to have S's name associated with what he wanted - putting on plays. The choice of play and manner of its production are entirely at the discretion of The Bush Theatre."

Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre, Josie Rourke, said today, "We are honoured that the Bush will be the home of the inaugural Simon Gray Award. It is terrific to be connected with such a significant playwright, and to form a part of his considerable legacy. The award's support of new writers will represent both a great moment and a concrete help in the career of the recipient."

The 40th anniversary production of Butley starring Dominic West is now showing at The Duchess Theatre, London.
