Dateline: 15th January, 2006
The artistic director of the Soho Theatre, Abigail Morris, has left the theatre after thirteen years in the post. Nicholas Allott, the Chair of Sohos Board, said, We are enormously grateful to Abigail for her contribution to the company over a long period of time and I would particularly like to pay tribute to her vision and tenacity at a crucial stage in the theatres development. We wish her all the very best for the future. She actually left before Christmas' although there was no official resignation and theatre sources confirmed that there had been discussions about the possibility for some time. Recently she has had some time away from the theatre, most recently in the autumn of last year when she took sabbatical leave to direct Laura Wade's Colder Than Here, which the theatre premiered, in New York She was the moving force behind the move in 2000 from the Cockpit Theatre into the former synagogue which is now its home. Since moving into the £10.6m Dean Street premises, the Soho has read over 9,000 scripts and presented 78 new plays. Jonathan Lloyd, who has substituted for her in the past, will be acting artistic director until a new appointment is made. The process of finding a new directorn will begin next month, but the theatre has said it will not be rushed: they will appoint when they find the right person and (s)he can start. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
