Solo in Scarborough

From 28th September to 7th October Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre presents SoloSeason, ten solo shows by visiting companies.

28th September
SHAMS Theatre presents
The Garden
Written and performed by Jonathan Young
When Jay returns from Bosnia to clear out his great-uncle’s house, he discovers family history repeating itself as first tragedy, then farce. A moving story of love lost and found, shell-shock, and the power of memory, inspired by The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

29th & 30th (matinee) September
Theatre Unlimited presents
Defying Hitler
Adapted and performed by Rupert Wickham, Theatre Unlimited return from a sellout success in New York with this witty and moving account of a young man’s life, growing up in Berlin, under the Nazis. First performed at the National Theatre, this is a thought provoking and powerful production.

30th September
Jellymould Jazz presents
An Evening with Ella

19 year old Ruby Wood, one of the emerging talents in the country, performs this tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and the Great American Songbook. Her effortless phrasing and unique style draws influence from the classic Ella sound.

1st October
Soma/Numa & UK Arts Foundation for Dance present
Body of Experience
Six leading artists show their amazing journeys and experience they have built over time through this specially commissioned solo piece. Featuring music from many world traditions such as Ballet, Contemporary, Indian, Caribbean, Egyptian and Japanese.

2nd October
Richard Jordan Productions present
Dylan Thomas; Return Journey
With Bob Kingsdom as Dylan Thomas and original direction by Anthony Hopkins, this performance has enjoyed worldwide acclaim for 21 years, and is now on its farewell tour. Experience Dylan Thomas on his last lecture tour through his poems, stories and incisive comments.

3rd October
Toothless
Devised and performed by Kazuko Hohki, this is a comic elegy to Kazuko’s mother, Yukiko, who was a popular entertainer in modern Japan. She examines her relationship with her mother through video, songs, puppets and computer animation.

4 October
Hey Gringo! Through Peru
Performed by Peter Searles, this is a series of poignant and hilarious travel tales. Taking the audience on a trip over the Andes, down the Amazon…with no Rough Guide to help!

5th October
I Miss Communism
Starring Ines Wurth, and nominated for the Amnesty International Award and Writers’ Guild Award, this compelling story looks at three women and three generations who lived through three wars.

6th October
Linda Marlowe productions present
Believe
Directed by Gavin Marshall and starring Linda Marlowe, Believe looks at the tormented, meek and passionate women who have carved their names into history and asks the question where does God fit into our lives now?

And

7th October
Linda Marlowe productions present
Mortal Ladies Possessed
Original writing by Tennessee Williams and adapted by Matthew Hurt, this second piece starring Linda Marlowe looks at the women who feature in Tennessee Williams’ plays, the characters are brought to life in Linda Marlowe’s unique physical style.
