British/Iraqi Soldier's Tale to Premiere in January

The Motion Group in a co-production with The Old Vic Theatre Company and in association with The National Theatre of Iraq will present the London premiere of The Soldier's Tale, directed by Andrew Steggall

This British/Iraqi collaboration will open at the Old Vic on 30th January (previews from 26th) and run to 4th February.

Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat is presented in a new translation by Abdulkareem Kasid and Rebeccsa Lemkiewicz in both English and Arabic, the languages and styles conveying different but equally compelling voices.

Stravinsky composed L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale) in 1918 in the midst of war torn Europe. Working with writer Ramuz, Stravinsky interwove his musical composition with the Faustian story of a Soldier who sells his soul to the devil in return for infinite wealth. This new narrative will honour the original, but, through conversations with the artists, friends and colleagues in Iraq, the authors hope to uncover new stories celebrating the common and uncommon stories of those involved.

Last year the The Motion Group presented Jeremy Sams' translation of Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale as a one-off event at The Old Vic Theatre with Jeremy Irons, Hugh Dancy and Nicholas Le Prevost. That critically acclaimed performance set the foundations for this new project.

Director Andrew Steggall has made several trips to Iraq to carry out castings in Baghdad and workshops with the actors in Kurdistan.

With the assistance of Hayder Daffer, a young Iraqi film director, Andrew Steggall has cast three talented Iraqi actors - Alaa Rasheed, Falah Fayeh and Dhiaa Ouda.

Veteran British actor Julian Glover, along with Martin Marquez and Ciaran McMenamin, will join the Iraqi cast.

John Stravinsky has kindly given his permission to integrate new music. Ahmed Mukhtar, the Oud player and composer, will create this additional, Iraqi and Arabic music to contribute the necessary musical element of the dialogue. Iraqi players Shakir Hassan Zamil and Sattar al Saadi will join the western ensemble to bring this new, cross cultural production to life.
