Theatre is Dumbing Down, says Sondheim Theatre, and, in particular music theatre, is being dumbed down in the US and the UK, Stephen Sondheim told an audience at a National Theatre Platform event. Theatre-going in the West End and on Broadway has become so expensive, he feels, that people are not willing to take the risk of paying to see something they might not enjoy. Hence the reason for so many revivals and shows compiled from existing music. The public in New York is not that interested in anything they havent seen before. Im afraid thats happening here, too, he said. He added that there are plenty of good new talent in both London and New York, but in London there's nowhere for their work to be performed and, in new York, no money. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
