Dateline: 25th April, 2007
The Stephen Sondheim Society is to gather together twelve of the top students from the major UK performing arts schools to provide an evening of entertainmentat The venue, in the heart of the West End where a bursary prize, established to recognise exceptional achievement in musical theatre performance, will be awarded to a UK performing arts student with a particular passion for the works of Stephen Sondheim.
The students will be performing a varied selection of Sondheim numbers. In addition, because Sondheim himself is an ardent promoter of excellence in new writing, he has requested that works by new UK composers and lyricists are also included in the programme. It is his aim that, through this competition, the Society can also increase awareness of new writing and provide a platform for the recognition of new writing talent. To this end they are working with Mercury Musical Developments (a major supporter of new musical theatre writing); which has compiled an extensive portfolio of new songs and each of the students will be performing one of these works in addition to their Sondheim song.
There will be a panel of three experienced and highly respected judges: Julia McKenzie, Philip Quast and Edward Seckerson, each of whom is closely associated with the works of Sondheim, and the event will be compered by Maria Friedman. Details
The event takes place at The Venue in Leicester Place on Sunday May 13th, starting at 4.00 pm. Tickets cost £20 (£17.50 for members of Mercury Musical Developments and the Stephen Sondheim Society) and are available exclusively through The Stephen Sondheim Society.
