Dateline: 18th June, 2004 SO Chorus Told: It's Official The entire Scottish Opera chorus has been told officially that they will be made redundant - just minutes before they were due to go onstage. The half had already been called and it was about ten minutes before the curtain as due to go up on a performance of La Bohème at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh when they were called together by the chorus manager who told them that they were to lose their jobs. At the end of the performance, conductor Richard Farnes took the usual curtain call, but instead of wearing the traditional evening dress, he wore a white tee-shirt printed with the slogan "No Chorus, No Opera, No Way". He then led the orchestra and principals in a round of applause for the chorus. The Chorus also held a singing protest outside the theatre both before and after last night's show, asking audience members to sign their petition. It has also emerged that Christopher Barron, SO's chief executive, has signed the petition against the cuts. Next Tuesday the Duchess of Gloucester will attend a performance of La Bohème and on Wednesday will visit a primary school in Kelso to see the children perform The Minotaur, a 30 minute opera which is the result of work done with the school by Scottish Opera For All (SOFA), the educational arm of Scottish Opera. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
