Garrett Takes the Veil at the Palladium Opera soprano Lesley Garrett is the play the Mother Abbess in the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium in November. One of the most well known operatic stars to the general public, she had made numerous television appearances both as a guest and in her own shows. Her most recent London appearance was as Yum Yum in the last two performances of English National Opera's revival of Jonathan Miller's production of The Mikado as the Coliseum, the role she created in the production's original run twenty years ago. Before that she starred in Welsh National Opera's The Merry Widow during the autumn 2005 season. She will be joined by Anthony Head as Captain von Trapp. His most recent West End appearance was in Simon Gray's Otherwise Engaged at the Criterion last year. The part of Maria will go to the winner of the TV reality series How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? which will air later this summer. Thr production, directed by Jeremy Sams with choreography by Arlene Phillips, will open on the 14th November (previews from 4th).
