Jude Kelly

Kelly to Take Over South Bank

Jude Kelly is to be the new artistic director of the South Bank Centre, the arts complex just along the river from the National Theatre which comprises the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery. She is also chair of the Arts, Education and Culture Committee for London 2012 and will remain in that post, overseeing the £22m arts festival which will accompany the Olympics.

She was the first artistic director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 1988 (it opened in 1990) until 2002, and before that was artistic director of BAC, then the Battersea Arts Centre. Her most recent work was directing Ridiculusmus’ The Importance of Being Earnest which played at the Barbican Pit in June before setting off on a national tour, bfore which she directed ENO's On the Town at the Coliseum.

The South Bank Centre programme consists of classical and modern concerts, visual arts, literatrure and dance. The largest of the venues, the Royal Festival Hall, is currently closed while being refurbished at a cost of £91m.
