Southwark Playhouse Under Threat

Southwark Playhouse looks set to lose its home when the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, where it is situated in the vaults beneath the tracks, is completed. The aim of the redevelopment is to cope with increased capacity and to incorporate the Thameslink line.

Work will start in December 2012 but Network Rail have no plans to reincorporate the venue in to the new station which will be completed in 2018.

A statement from the venue says, "While we are looking to move to one of several exciting spaces in 2013, it is likely that they will only be available on short term leases. We believe that the new station will offer us a brilliant opportunity to secure a long-term home for the theatre once the development has been completed."

So, the statement continues, "We need to convince Network Rail that Southwark Playhouse will be a great benefit to the new station and the surrounding community."

The planning consultation period ends on Saturday 6th August and the theatre is urging supporters to email Gordon Adams, the case officer at Southwark Council, before then. The application reference is 11/AP/1987.
