Theatres Trust Legal Move over Southwark Playhouse

As we reported in our news story of 3rd August, Southwark Playhouse looks set to lose its home when the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, where it is situated in the vaults beneath the tracks, is completed because Network Rail have no plans to reincorporate the venue in to the new station which will be completed in 2018.

Now the Theatres Trust has told Southwark Council that it will follow its usual policy of seeking a replacement venue or a financial contribution towards one.

Writing to the council, the Trust said, "The Theatres Trust objects to the application because it includes the loss of the Southwark Playhouse, with no replacement cultural performance space proposed as part of the scheme.

"It is the Trust’s policy that where there is a planning application to demolish a theatre for the redevelopment of land, it will oppose the application and will seek to establish an equivalent and improved replacement or a planning obligation that provides a financial contribution to address the loss of the amenity and enhancement of the local planning authority’s theatre infrastructure."
