Too Much Box Ticking, Says Spacey Speaking at the Institute of Directors annual conference this week, Old Vic artistic director Kevin Spacey said that arts organisations are having to spend too much time ticking boxes and so their work in engaging with their communities is hampered. Theatre "practitioners and craftsmen" should be trusted, he added. Theatre is a force for good, he believes, as it can bring out the best in young people. The arts and culture, he said, can "educate and inspire" young people. He also argued for government help for theatres which are threatened with closure.
