Speaking English Classic Drama

A free day of talks and workshops, Speaking English Classic Drama at the National Theatre on 31st October - the 2007 event commemorating the pioneering work of William Poel, the late nineteenth century Shakespeare actor-director - was organised by the Society for Theatre Research in association with the National.

The sessions - led by actress Prunella Scales, director Braham Murray, the National's Head of Voice Jeannette Nelson and RADA's Senior Voice Tutor, David Carey - took the participants on a journey through some very practical approaches to Elizabethan, Jacobean and Restoration texts, culminating in a session in the Olivier theatre to put into practice some of the ideas, as well as learning to fill the enormous space.

The 24 actors and directors taking part were chosen from about a hundred applicants.

"We were looking for professionals who had a few years in the business, who had a decent record of theatre work but who might have got to the stage where they realised how much more there was to know," explained Organiser, Norman Tozer. "We wanted to open up possibilities and perhaps restore confidence in the glory of language."

One participant commented, "I almost didn't apply. When I saw the list of quality professionals who were going to teach, and it was free, I couldn't believe it was for real." Another added, "The whole day was extremely valuable for a young professional like me, as moving away from the training of drama school, the opportunity to refresh your skills is all too rare. I hope the Society for Theatre Research will be in a position to offer this wonderful opportunity to many other young actors in the future."
