Dateline: 28th April, 2006
Revamp of The Stage The Stage, the profession's weekly newspaper, has relaunched itself as a tabloid-sized paper with a new design. Catherine Comerford, great granddaughter of the Victorian founder Maurice Comerford and today's Managing Director, said, "(The issue of) April 27th will be the culmination of a process we began in 2004 by undertaking a radical analysis of our potential readership. We wanted to find out how they receive and react to news and information about the profession and everything which affects their livelihoods. The redesign is much more than skin-deep." Were changing the content mix across both newspaper and website to make sure the service each provides is complementary", added editor Brian Attwood. "More than that, were developing interactivity between the two, exploiting the unique strengths of both. The plan is to use the web to break news stories as and when they happen, and then use the newspaper to provide greater background and analysis on a weekly basis." The new-look paper, he went on, uses "a more open layout to enhance the reading experience and reposition the title to attract the broadest possible demographic." The Stage was launched in 1880 and has remained in the ownership of the Comerford family throughout. Catherine Comerford, the firms present Managing Director, is the great-granddaughter of the founder. The next generation are already waiting in the wings, including Martha Comerford aged 8, and Tristan Comerford, her cousin, aged 3.
