Simon Stallworthy

Gala Director Resigns

Simon Stallworthy, the Director of Durham's Gala Theatre & Cinema since April 2005, has announced his resignation today.

"It has been nearly two years since Durham County Council took over the theatre," he said, "and in this time, I'd expected to see a clear indication of Gala's future form of governance; whether this was to stay as a local authority theatre, to be run by an established private company or to be put in some form of trust. With this uncertainty into Gala's future, it is very difficult to run the building with the kind of energy and creativity it needs, and which I believe I had provided. My preferred future has always been as a stand-alone trust and despite outlining this quite clearly 18 months ago, there is still no clear indication of the Council's view.

"It's very hard for a theatre to stand still, and very hard to be the Director of a theatre which is in limbo and increasingly bogged down by policies and procedures not relevant to a creative business. I have decided it's time for me to move on."

Since Stallworthy took over at the Gala, audiences have increased by 45% and the theatre has produced fifteen in-house shows, the latest and the third in-house panto, Cinderella, being the biggest selling show in the theatre's history.

After graduating from Bristol University in Drama, he worked in stage management at various theatres around the country including the Royal Court and the Leicester Haymarket, moving into directing and then became Executive Director of Hull Truck in 1995. Immediately prior to taking over the Gala he was Executive Director of the Bolton Octagon.
