Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart Is God

Patrick Stewart is to play God in the only outdoor English Mystery Play to be performed in the UK this year, at Barnsley's Monk Bretton Priory from 29th June to 11th July.

While the full line-up is yet to be revealed, Yorkshire-born actor Patrick Stewart has already signed up to play the voice of God.

"Mystery Plays played an important part in my childhood years in theatre in the North of England", he explains. "I'm sure they will continue to be an inspiration to young people today."

It is hoped that he will be appearing personally for at least some of the two-week production, with filming commitments currently unconfirmed by writer/director John Kelly is taking the precaution of recording his lines and filming his part in advance.

Also appearing in the production which is is presented by Barnsley's Secret Theatre Company will be Phoenix Nights' Toby Foster.

Local writer and broadcaster John Kelly has written, designed and directed the production which will feature around 200 in the cast and crew. The production will remain close to the original principles of the plays, bringing together a range of talents, from amateurs to acclaimed actors and celebrities.

"It would have been the easiest thing in the world to cast people who can read their lines like Olivier," Kelly said, "but I didn't want that - it removes the earthiness."
