Former vocalist and bass guitarist with The Police, Sting took part in an event at Northampton’s Royal and Derngate to unveil the musical The Last Ship, for which he wrote the music and lyrics.

Along with cast members Joe McGann, Charlie Hardwick and Richard Fleeshman, Sting performed songs from the show and answered questions alongside producer Karl Sydow.

The Last Ship, initially inspired by Sting’s 1991 album The Soul Cages and his childhood experiences, tells the story of a community suffering from the demise of the shipbuilding industry in Tyne and Wear, with the closure of the Swan Hunter shipyard.

The Last Ship features some of Sting’s best-known songs including “Island of Souls”, “All This Time” and “When We Dance”. It takes to the Derngate stage from Tuesday 24 until Saturday 27 April.
