Dateline: 17th February, 2008
Stomp Twice on Sundays Stomp (at the Ambassadors) is to present two shows on Sundays at 2.00 and 5.00 from 25th February, the first West End show to do so. The new schedule will be one show on Mondays and Fridays and two on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, but none on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Agreements with the unions have been renegotiated. In 2003, when the show was at the Vaudeville, it was one of the first to open for Sunday matinees. Negotiations with BECTU for the National Theatre to open on Sundays are still progressing, and Arts Council England gave the theatre an additional grant in its recent settlement specifically for Sunday opening, which will mean that the National will be open for seven days a week. Sunday opening, which is now the norm on Broadway, makes perfect sense, according to the co-creator of Stomp, Steve McNicholas. He told the Stage, "When tourists go to a city, most people go for a long weekend. What do they do in London on a Sunday? Theres a huge gap in the market in the entertainment scene in London on Sundays. Sunday trade is now accepted and it is now time for theatre to follow suit."
