Dateline: 19th April, 2006
Stoppard at the Royal Court Tom Stoppard's latest play, Rock 'n' Roll, based on the history of Czechoslovakia between the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution, will premiere at the Royal Court as part of the theatre's fiftieth anniversary season from 3rd June to 15th July, after which it will transfer to the Duke of York's, although no dates have yet been announced. Directed by Trevor Nunn, it will feature Brian Cox, Sinead Cusack and Rufus Sewell. Nunn directed the premieres Stoppard's Arcadia (1993) and The Coast of Utopia trilogy (2003) at the National Theatre, where a number of his other plays had their first performance under other directors. According to Stoppard, he has spent most of the most enjoyable theatrical nights of his life at the Royal Court and "I dont want to fall under a bus before having a play on its stage. His inclusion in the fiftieth anniversary programme has proved controversial as - as his comment above shows - he has never had a play there whereas the other authors represented have all been a part of the theatre's history and most of the plays premiered there. As we reported in January, playwright and former Royal Court director William Gaskill has cancelled the production of his play Sirens, a stage adaptation of James Joyce's Ulysses which he was to have directed as part of the celebrations, because he disapproves of the inclusion of Stoppard's play in the season, which is advertised as a celebration of the Court's writers and directors, as neither Stoppard nor Trevor Nunn has any previous connection with the theatre. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
