Genlyte Acquires Strand's US and Asian Arms

Lighting and LX control manufacturer Strand last week called in the receivers. Although US company the Genlyte Group has bought the US and Asian arms of the company for $8.5m, the UK operation has ceased trading with the loss of all jobs at the company's Hammersmith headquarters and in Kirkcaldy, Fife. On its website Genlyte has assured US and Asian Strand customers that they will continue to "fully support and service its products."

Richard Griffiths of administrators KPMG said, “As a result of circumstances beyond the administrators’ control, business and trade of this company had to be ceased immediately.” This has left the staff fearful of the loss of redundancy payments.

Last year the company announced it was to move from Kirkaldy and ninety have been made redundant in the last year, with many of them having redundancy payments made over a period of time. They are likely to lose the money owed to them.

Founded in 1914, Strand has long been Britain's leading stage lighting manufacturer and one of the leading manufacturers in the world. Its products, including the Light Palette range of controls and the SL series of luminaires are in use in theatres throughout the world.
