Panto Out For a White Christmas Sunderland Empire has cancelled its planned panto Sleeping Beauty and replaced it with the musical White Christmas, starring Tom Chambers and Adam Cooper. Cooper starred in the same production at The Lowry in Salford last year alongside Aled Jones and Suzanne Shaw. It was first brought to the stage in 2006 by the producers of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, appearing at the Plymouth Theatre Royal and The Southampton Mayflower. In 2007 it broke box office records at the Edinburgh Playhouse and Wales Millennium Centre. It played to sell-out houses at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway. White Christmas will run from 19th November to 1st January, more than a month longer than the planned panto run. Andrew Rawlinson, general manager of the Sunderland Empire, said, "Hosting the delightful musical White Christmas this year, was just too good an opportunity to miss." Tickets go on sale on 8th June and those who have already booked for the panto will be able to swap their tickets. "It isn't unusual that these things happen," Rawlinson added, "but we just need to make sure we deal with it in a very systematic and fair way, making sure that those who are booked are transferred over." The Empire reinstated its panto three years ago after some years of running major musicals, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Starlight Express, over the Christmas period. The last three pantos were produced by First Family Entertainment, an arm of previous management Live Nation and now part of current management the Ambassador Theatre Group. First family was due to produce Sleeping Beauty.
