Opera and Ballet from The Sun

Readers of tabloid newspaper The Sun are to be offered reduced price tickets through a partnership between the Royal Opera House, the paper and The Helen Hamlyn Trust.

Two special Paul Hamlyn First Nights will be held for Bizet’s opera Carmen (3rd October) and Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling (7th October), for which tickets will be made available for between £7.50 and £30. Details of how to obtain tickets will be published in The Sun later in the summer.

Gordon Smart, editor of paper's celebrity column Bizarre, said, "Last year over 2,000 Sun readers enjoyed a night out at the opera thanks to this brilliant partnership with the Royal Opera House. Whilst many people were surprised by the collaboration, our readers told us that they loved the experience and couldn’t wait to do it again. That’s why this autumn we’re giving readers yet more chances to see world class performances at unbeatable prices."

The Royal Opera House's CEO, Tony Hall, added, "Both Carmen and Mayerling are wonderful theatrical works that I think will excite people who may be seeing opera or ballet for the first time. Carmen with its instantly recognisable score is filled with passion and heat and Mayerling is a dark chilling ballet that will change people’s perception of ballet forever; both are guaranteed to captivate newcomers."

In Carmen Latvian mezzo Elina Garanca plays Carmen and Roberto Alagna her fated lover and nemesis, Don José. Ildebrando d’Arcangelo returns as the macho bullfighter Escamillo and Chinese soprano Liping Zhang, counterbalancing the flamboyant gypsy, sings good-girl Micaëla.

It is not known at the moment which who will appear in the special performance of Mayerling, but possible stars are, as Crown Prince Rudolf, Carlos Acosta, Thiago Soares, Rupert Pennefather, Johan Kobborg andEdward Watson, and, as Mary Vetsera, Tamara Rojo, Lauren Cuthbertson, Melissa Hamilton, Leanne Benjamin and Mara Galeazzi.
