Dateline: 14th October, 2011
London Puppetry Festival London's Little Angel Theatre, currently celebrating its 50th year, is producing the second adult puppetry festival for the capital, running from 28th October to 6th November. SUSPENSE had its debut in 2009 garnering much critical praise, winning a Fringe Report Award for Best Festival and a Peter Brook Empty Space award nomination. This year promises to be even better with over 30 companies participating in events taking place in eleven different venues. The range of puppetry techniques is wide: Flabbergast Theatre's work draws on the Bunraku style of puppetry, Movingstage presents a drama with marionettes, The Money Game (or The Getting of Wisdom), and Indefinite Articles who in 2009 offered the hands-on fun of Let Us Clay return with Penumbra, a darker piece on the effects of desire and decay which, as the title suggests, uses "shadows, puppets and the human body". Also making a return visit is the satirical Great Puppet Horn from Edinburgh-based Pangolin's Teatime. SUSPENSE, however, also showcases and celebrates contemporary work from practitioners across the globe. Offerings from overseas include the UK premiere of Tehran based Yas-e-Tamam Theater's The House of Bernarda Alba, Autumn Portraits from Sandglass Theater of Vermont USA and, from closer to home, Austria's Wild Theatre's show, Stonebelly, that suggests that reality is not all its cracked up to be. There is something to appeal to all tastes whether novices or aficionados. In addition to the many performances, the festival includes workshops, master classes talks, and late-night cabaret. All the work programmed in SUSPENSE is for adults. For full information and to book tickets visit the SUSPENSE Festival website. Sandra Giorgetti
