Publicity image for Tamasha's Wuthering Heights

A Bollywood Brontë

The scorched desert landscape of Rajasthan is the setting for Tamasha's musical interpretation of Emily Brontë's classic tale of passion, jealousy and revenge.

Shakuntala is the beautiful and headstrong daughter of merchant Singh. Krishan is the wild street urchin that Singh adopts. Thrown together as unlikely siblings, their adolescent play soon turns into a tumultuous passion. But can their love withstand Indian society's taboos and hierarchies, and Shakuntala's yearning for the riches and status that only wealthy Vijay can provide?

Wuthering Heights will have the dark and brooding atmosphere of the original novel, with the feelgood elements of Bollywood. Influenced by the history of Indian cinema from sultry black-and-white epics of the '50s, to colourful contemporary blockbusters, Wuthering Heights is aimed at theatregoers of all ages.

Deepak Verma has previously worked with Tamasha on his play Ghostdancing (Lyric Hammersmith) which was based on Zola's Thérèse Raquin, and he is also known for his long-running role as Sanjay in Eastenders.
