Tartar National Theatre Comes to the Riverside On 22 December 1906 the first professional theatre in the Muslim world opened with a performance in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan in what is now the Russian Federation. Twenty years later it was named as a State Academic Theatre, the highest category of theatre in the Soviet Union, and in 1939 took the name of its greatest playwright. The Galiaskar Kamal State Acaedmic Theatre will be visiting Riverside Studios from 3rd to 8th October with three productions: First Theatre, Dumb Cuckoo and Iron Pea. On 3rd and 4th Octiber, First Theatre is a comedy by Tatarstan's greatest playwright about the day that theatre first came to Kazan. For some it was a sign of movement from isolation towards the wider world, to others it represented the very worst of modern, western influences. Dumb Cuckoo runs on 5th and 6th October. On the front line of the 1939 Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland a Soviet soldier becomes separated from his troop and is found by a Finnish sniper. Enemies caught up in a conflict that is not of their making, they discover a deeper bond that unites them - a bond that will change their lives forever. Zulfat Zhakim's powerful drama moves between 1939 and the modern day to explore the strength of deep-rooted cultural ties. On 8th October it is the turn of Iron Pea. An Iron Pea is a Tatar expression for a greedy man with no concern for others. This magical show, based on Tatar folklore, tells of the battle between good and evil. How can the forces of evil corrupt a man whose love for his mother is stronger than his desire for all the treasures of the world? Only by shattering and destroying the ideals on which his love is based. But the powers they unleash have no limits ... It has a cast of 24, music, dancing and bright, colourful costumes. All three are performed in Tartar with a simultaneous English translation via headsets. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
