The shortlist for the 2006 Theatre Book Prize, organised by the Society for Theatre Research, has been announced. The short-listed titles are:

The Victorian Clown
by Jacky Bratton & Ann Featherstone (Cambridge University Press)

John Osborne: a Patriot for Us
by John Heilpern (Chatto & Windus)

Theatre Workshop: Joan Littlewood and the Making of Modern British Theatre
by Robert Leach (University of Exeter Press)

Lilian Baylis: a biography

The winner will be announced at 11.30 am on April 12th 2007 at a reception at the Theatre Museum when the prize will be presented by Daniel Radcliffe.

The Theatre Museum will be reopening its doors especially for this occasion. They were closed in January, following the decision of the Victoria and Albert Museum to shut down the Museum in Covent Garden and at some time in the future to open a gallery in its main South Kensington Museum to display items from what it is now calling its 'Theatre Collections'.

This is probably the last public event that will be held at the Theatre Museum and the last occasion when those attending will be able to visit it.

The Theatre Book Prize was first awarded for 1997 to celebrate the Jubilee of the Society for Theatre Research. It was created to encourage the writing and publication of books on theatre history and practice, both those which present the theatre of the past and those which record contemporary theatre for the future. It is now presented annually for a book on theatre which an independent panel of judges considers to be the best published during the year. All new works of original research first published in English are eligible except for play texts and studies of drama as literature. The prize of £400 is presented to the author.

The Judges are:

John Woodvine who has been long established as one of Britain's leading actors, his working ranging from Shakespeare to Dr Who. His Falstaff for the English Shakespeare Company gained him an Olivier Award, and he has been a leading actor with both the RSC and the National Theatre, but he is familiar to a wider audience through films and television.

Richard Mangan, who recently edited John Gielgud's letters for publication, worked extensively in theatre before taking up his present post heading the Mander and Mitchenson Collection.

Heather Neill who is a critic and theatre writer who contributes to a variety of national papers and specialist theatre publications and websites, including The Times, The Times Educational Supplement, Around the Globe and whatsonstage.com and theatrevoice.com
