The Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre

Royal Court Goes Local

In a new venture called Theatre Local the Royal Court is to take over a disused shop in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre which will run as a theatre from 3rd March.

The season will open on that date with a revival of debbie tucker green's Random, which originally played in Sloane Square in 2008, and will continue over the next six months with transfers from the spring season at the Theatre Upstairs: Disconnect by Anupama Chandrasekhar (31st March to 3rd April), The Empire by DC Moore (2nd - 5th June) and Spur Of The Moment by Anya Reiss (25th - 28th August). Tickets will be £8 (£5 concessions) and 70% will only be on sale in the week of the production.

The plays will be presented with the bare minimum of set and lighting and passers-by will be able to see what is happening through the shop's windows.

"Theatre Local is a new initiative which takes Royal Court plays to the heart of a community that may not otherwise get the chance to see our work," artistic director Dominic Cooke said." It forms an integral part of our ambition to create unpredictable relationships between new plays and audiences.

"We felt the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre was the perfect base for us to start this venture. It sits at the centre of one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in Europe and we are looking forward to forging links with local people and welcoming new audiences to our shows.

"We hope it will contribute to creating a new generation of audiences at the Court, both at our home in Sloane Square and beyond."

The project is sponsored by Bloomberg to the tune of £100,000 over three years and the intention is to move to other areas of London in future years.
